About 18% of urinary tract infections (UTIs) are caused by zoonotic extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC) strains.
A study published online found that zoonotic ExPEC strains accounted for 18% of UTIs, with a higher proportion in high-poverty neighborhoods (21.5%).
Researchers from George Washington University, led by Maliha Aziz, collected E. coli isolates from retail meat and patients with UTI, and used a Bayesian latent class model to infer the host origin of each isolate.
The study suggests that zoonotic ExPEC strains play a significant role in UTIs, particularly in high-poverty neighborhoods.
Author's summary: Zoonotic E coli strains cause 18% of UTIs.
