A recent Gallup poll found that 49% of Americans believe crime is increasing, a decrease from 64% last year and 77% two years ago.
“We're moving in a really good direction in this country,” said criminologist Alex Piquero. “And that's a credit to law enforcement and all the non-law enforcement agencies around the United States that are working together to drive down the crime problem."
According to Piquero, a professor at the University of Miami, the country is on track to record the lowest levels of homicide since the early 1960s. The poll also revealed that more Republicans (69%) than independents (45%) or Democrats (37%) view crime as an extremely or very serious problem.
