Donna Jean Godchaux-MacKay, the Alabama-born singer who performed with the Grateful Dead, has died at 78, according to The Associated Press.
She passed away on Sunday at Alive Hospice in Nashville after battling cancer, a family spokesperson said.
Before joining the Grateful Dead in the 1970s, Godchaux-MacKay built a prolific career as a session singer in Muscle Shoals and Memphis, contributing backing vocals to classic hits, including:
