History and Development
Launched in 1994, Artissima was part of a pivotal period in Italy's expansion into the contemporary art scene.
- The first museum entirely dedicated to contemporary art, Castello di Rivoli, opened a few years prior.
- The founding of Fondazione Sandretto shortly followed, and together, the two institutions became pillars of Turin's contemporary art scene and Italy's broader art ecosystem.
By being publicly anchored, curator-driven, and deliberately porous, Artissima has set itself apart from the mega-fairs.
