Bobcats Cope with Mid-Semester Burnout

As Ohio University Bobcats have passed the midpoint in the semester, some are experiencing academic burnout and its effects.

According to the American Psychological Association Dictionary of Psychology, burnout is defined as

“physical, emotional or mental exhaustion accompanied by decreased motivation, lowered performance and negative attitudes toward oneself and others.”

Willow Downard, a senior studying commercial photography, believes academic burnout affects students on two fronts: mentally and academically. She stated,

“Mentally because you put in all this work and get so little reward out of it, and then you're just expected to keep putting in more and more work,”
and added that this leads to exhaustion and a decline in grades.

Author's summary: Bobcats face academic burnout mid-semester.
