Dozens of workers at Maluti-a-Phofung Water (MAP Water) in the Free State went on strike on Monday, protesting against the municipality's plan to close down the water company.

Striking workers blocked the entrance to the MAP Water office in Phuthaditjhaba with their cars and picketed outside, singing songs.

A 25-page "execution plan" dated 7 October 2025, outlines the municipality's intention to transfer water services delivery back to the municipality.

No comment from the municipality or MAP Water was available.
