Transformation of Richmond Broom Co. Building into Condos Complete
The residential redevelopment of the former Richmond Broom Co. in Shockoe Bottom is now complete, led by Charlottesville-based developer Claudine Wispelwey.
“I have refused to use the word ‘luxury.’ I hate it, I have seen the crappiest apartments called 'luxury.' I will not use that word. I will use the word 'quality.' We just really went for quality all over the place,”
Wispelwey said. The 100-year-old former industrial building has been transformed into a 12-unit condominium development, dubbed the Broom Factory Lofts.
- The project was financed with the help of historic tax credits.
- Original features such as wrought-iron windows and conveyor belts were preserved to pay homage to the building's past.
- Sure Hand Signs re-created the original Richmond Broom Co. sign.
The 2-story building was purchased for $1.3 million last year by Wispelwey and a group of silent partners.
