Galamsey Fight: EPA Launches "Reclaim, Restore, Rebuild" Initiative
The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has launched a new initiative, "Reclaim, Restore, Rebuild", to heal lands devastated by illegal mining, also known as galamsey.
According to Prof. Nana Ama Browne Klutse, CEO of the EPA, the government is determined to reclaim and rehabilitate landscapes ravaged by galamsey operations, which have stripped bare vast stretches of Ghana's forests, farmlands, and river systems, endangering biodiversity, contaminating water sources, and threatening livelihoods and public health.
The reclamation project we're launching today is a step toward healing the land, restoring livelihoods, and rebuilding hope.
A 2,000-hectare pilot reclamation project has been launched at Gyaman Nkwanta in the Amansie Central District of the Ashanti Region, as part of the initiative.
