Music ran through the veins of Johann Strauss II, who was born in Vienna on 25th October 1825.
His father, Johann Strauss (1804-49), a composer of light music, including waltzes, polkas, and galops, opposed his son's pursuit of a music career, and young Johann began as a bank clerk.
However, Johann secretly studied the violin with Franz Amon, the leader of his father's orchestra, until his father discovered and whipped him, vowing to "beat the music out of the boy).
After his parents divorced, Johann's mother, Maria Anna, supported his musical endeavors, and in 1844, Strauss formed his own dance band at the Zur Stadt Belgrad tavern.
Despite his father's opposition, Johann Strauss II went on to compose many of the greatest waltzes ever.
Author's summary: Johann Strauss II became the Waltz King despite his father's opposition.
