Album Review: Nervous Twitch – The Day Job Gets in the Way

The Leeds-based band Nervous Twitch returns with their latest album, The Day Job Gets in the Way. The reviewer, who had previously covered their 2022 record Some People Never Change, was pleasantly surprised to be invited once more by singer Erin to review the new release.

Right from the first listen, it’s apparent that Nervous Twitch still masterfully transform everyday frustrations into bursts of joyous defiance. Compared to their earlier work, which carried a “less-angry riot grrrl” spirit, this album feels freer, more playful, yet retains its punch.

“If I had to draw a comparison, I’d say it shares some DNA with The Slits: quirky, rough-edged punk with a DIY soul.”

The band continues to shape a unique identity—scrappy yet tuneful, raw yet instantly engaging. The production exudes an unpolished charm, reminiscent of a beloved vinyl treasure discovered in a second-hand record shop.

Erin’s voice glides above wiry guitars and a steady rhythm, blending sweetness with bite, adding warmth even to sharper lyrical moments. But listeners shouldn’t mistake that sweetness for softness.

Author’s Summary

This review highlights Nervous Twitch’s ability to mix playful punk energy with heartfelt DIY authenticity, resulting in an unrefined yet irresistibly engaging listening experience.
