Under a calm morning sky, the flags of the United Nations and the State of Qatar were raised together in Doha on Sunday, marking the approach of the Second World Summit for Social Development. This ceremony symbolized the United Nations officially taking over the Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC) as the venue for global leaders to collaborate on revitalizing the international social pact.
The event, held at the extensive conference facility, was attended by senior officials from both Qatar and the United Nations. They were accompanied by a formation of UN security officers and members of Qatar’s Lekhwiya police forces stationed on either side of the two flagpoles.
“This moment formally marks the handover of this landmark facility to the United Nations,” said Li Junhua, UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs. “The QNCC is now transformed into a space where the global community will gather to advance solutions and renew hope.”
Ahmad Hassen Al-Hamadi, Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Qatar, welcomed the international community and highlighted Qatar's commitment to supporting dialogue and cooperation at the highest levels as host and partner.
The ceremony in Doha not only formalized the UN’s use of the QNCC but also emphasized the shared dedication to fostering global cooperation and progress in social development.
