Auburn University announced the dismissal of head football coach Hugh Freeze on Sunday, ending his turbulent two-plus seasons after a 10–3 loss on Saturday night.
Freeze, 56, finished with a 15–19 overall record in 32 games at Auburn, with disappointing results in SEC play. This included a 1–5 start in conference games this season and difficulties against ranked teams, leading to growing calls for a change from fans and boosters.
Athletic Director John Cohen said:
"Freeze: 'We haven't gotten the results.'"
Freeze was hired during the 2022 season on a six-year contract reportedly worth about $39 million. Recent reports estimate his buyout at around $15.4 million. He was brought in with the goal of restoring Auburn to SEC prominence.
Freeze’s subpar performance and Auburn’s ongoing conference struggles fueled dissatisfaction within parts of the fan base and booster community.
Summary: Auburn parted ways with Hugh Freeze after a disappointing tenure marked by poor SEC results and mounting pressure from supporters.
