Not to be missed: a double comet flyby near Earth, visible to the naked eye tonight - Futura-Sciences

Rare Double Comet Flyby Visible Tonight

It is uncommon to witness a comet streaking across the sky, and this month offers a unique opportunity to see two. Stargazers are encouraged to head outside after sunset with a blanket for this spectacular celestial event.

Two Green Comets Lighting Up the Northern Hemisphere

In October, observers across the Northern Hemisphere can spot not one but two glowing green comets. Both originate from the distant edges of the solar system and emit gas that gives them their characteristic emerald hue.

“After 3 days of coming up to this spot with a vision, the clouds finally cleared (well kind of). The clouds decided to drift under Comet C/2024 A6 Lemmon opposed to over it and gave me this incredible view last night.”

Comet C/2025 A6 (Lemmon): Rising and Brightening

The first comet, C/2025 A6 (Lemmon), was discovered by the Mount Lemmon Survey in Arizona, which inspired its name. It’s becoming visible higher in the evening sky each day after sunset.

“I woke up early to capture Comet ‘C/2025 A6 (Lemmon)’ before sunrise. But it's starting to rise higher in the evening each day after sunset and will be much brighter near the end of the month. I used my Celestron RASA telescope, ZWO ASI533MC camera, and an Antlia L-Filter.”

Visibility to the Naked Eye

Recently, observers have confirmed that Comet Lemmon is barely visible to the naked eye under very dark sky conditions, well away from city lights.

Enjoy this rare astronomical event as it offers a spectacular view of two comets glowing vividly in the night sky.

Author’s summary: This October, enjoy a rare sight as two green comets from the solar system’s edges become visible to the naked eye across the Northern Hemisphere’s night skies.
