Marian (née Hardaker) Pottruff was born on July 7, 1932, and passed away on October 30, 2025. She was the daughter of Richard Hardaker, who moved from Yorkshire, England, to work as a dye-chemist at Penman's mills in Paris, Ontario. He married Fern Mower, a descendant of the Crysler family from Upper Canada Village. Marian grew up alongside her younger sister, Joan.
In grade 10, Marian’s typing skills were noticed by a recruiter from J.D. Adams at Paris High School. With a full-time job offer, she persuaded her parents to let her leave school early. At J.D. Adams, Marian met Clinton Pottruff, a farmer. Their relationship was lively, involving suitors and a discreet marriage followed by an elopement to Florida until things settled.
Married life centered on the farm, where Marian raised three children and welcomed every child in Bethel into her home. She immersed her children in a world of books, encouraging trips to the library over watching TV. Despite her dedicated care, she never reminded her children of it, inspiring a wish to have learned more from her.
“As kids, mom 'steeped' us in her world of books... where a trip to the library outweighed the TV. In spite of her tireless care... not once did she remind us we owed her.”
Marian cultivated a strong community around her family. The Leach, Miller, and Davis families became an integral part of their lives.
Author’s summary: Marian Pottruff’s life was marked by deep family bonds, community ties, and a love of books that shaped her and those around her with lasting warmth and care.
